New Dubai Regulations for Renting Jet Skis and Watercraft

| Dubai Maritime Authority mandates tracking and remote-control systems for water sports equipment

The Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA) has announced new regulations for renting jet skis and watercraft for water sports in Dubai. In line with Law No. 3 of 2023 on Dubai Maritime Authority, issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the DMA has mandated that all companies renting out water sports equipment must install tracking and remote-control systems and programme their jet skis according to restricted speed zones.

The DMA has also made it mandatory for trainers to hold a training certificate for the safe use of personal watercraft. Failure to comply with the new regulations before October 31, 2023, will result in penalties and fines.

The new directive, which came into effect on May 1, 2023, is aimed at strengthening the sector and adopting global standards. The DMA's executive director, Sheikh Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, stated that the authority is committed to developing the industry and enhancing its partnership with the private sector.

The DMA has also issued a directive on transparency of local sea container charges in Dubai, requiring all service providers to declare their local sea container charges to the DMA through the Dubai Trade Single Window Portal. Service providers are prohibited from increasing their existing sea container charges in any way, except to reflect new or increased authority, Port Operator or government charges.

The new regulations will provide a clear understanding of local sea container charges and associated practices, ensuring that Dubai's maritime sector continues to grow while maintaining high standards of safety and accountability.
